They complete each other’s sentences. The boy is soft-spoken and sure, the girl is sparkling but submissive. Together is forever when it’s Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza talking about destiny. In our one-on-one interview with the two in light of their first TV series together titled “Destined To Be Yours” premiering worldwide tomorrow on GMA, we found a pair whose relationship has steadied as gleaned from their answers:
Tell us about your roles. Alden: “Benjamin Rosales, struggling architect. He lives with his mom and parang ano siya, happy-go-lucky at chickboy pero maraming pangarap. He is trying to be one of the best architects to give tribute to his Dad na architect din before.” Maine: “Sinag Obispo, radio DJ. Masayahin, simple, down-to-earth, makulit, tapos loves nature, may paninindigan sa mga choices niya sa buhay – and bitter sa love.” They say everything happens for a reason and always in God’s good time. Why is this the best time for you two to star in a series? A: “We really took time to plan. Hindi po kami parang padalosdalos na kung ano ’yung parang hinihingi ng viewers at ng tao du’n po kami agad. Like what Lola Dora told us po, ‘Tamang panahon.’ Kailangan we wait for the right timing for things to happen. Kasi when we rush into things, baka hindi po maging maganda ’yung result. I think si Lord, pinlano niya po ito na this is the best time for us to have a soap.” Describe your relationship now. A: “We have been together for two years now, so I think we know enough about each other. ’Yung working relationship po namin ni Maine is talagang nandu’n na siya sa comfort level. Wala na po kaming struggles to adjust to each other kasi mahirap po ’yun, especially since we are doing mostly love stories po. Kasi if we have that wall, that would be a struggle for the characters and for the project as well.” M: “Sobrang kumportable na po namin sa isa’t-isa as in we can tell each other everything.” What do you like about the concept of destiny? Do you believe in destiny? A: “Yes, of course. And ’yun po ’yung sinasabi ko talaga before: Na kung meron mang living testament ng destiny, it’s AlDub. Parang everything was orchestrated for us by a Supreme being, by God. Hindi namin kontrolado ’tong mga ’to.” God gave her you… A: “Yes, kasi it started off with a photo na blurred. Then after five years, we saw each other sa ‘Eat Bulaga!’ and that started everything. It’s a beautiful accident.” M: “Beautiful accident. Ako po firm believer talaga ako ng destiny. Na everything happens for a reason and siyempre pati na rin ’yung serendipity. So ’yung nangyayari sa amin ngayon, tingin ko, talagang naaayon sa plano ng Diyos.” You speak about the orchestration of a higher being, of God. So, if He put this together – you two together – then it should be forever? A: “We just let the situation play out. Iniintay lang po namin Siya kung saan kami dalhin. We just want to enjoy every moment, we enjoy the company of each other, we enjoy the projects that we’re doing… So kung saan man po kami dalhin ng mga ginagawa namin ngayon, which is happiness, du’n lang po kami susunod.” M: “Kung ano naman po ang mangyari sa amin ni Alden, hindi pa rin po mawawala siyempre ’yung pinagsamahan namin.” A: “Exactly. AlDub will live forever.” When GMA announced this series a few weeks ago, they have the highest hopes for it, saying, ‘It cannot fail.’ How do those words make you feel? A: “That’s out of our control na po eh…” So whatever happens, kasi parang you can only worry about things that you can control and just let go of the things you cannot (control). So ’yun pong angle na ’yun we just… kung saan man po pupunta ’yung soap namin is really up to destiny, kung anong magiging destiny nu’ng soap. “Hindi lang po kasi namin ’to journey ni Maine. There are a lot of people involved. Like AlDub nation and everyone who believes in us, this is our journey. Marami po kami, this is collective. So I believe naman po na hindi mawawala ’yung support but siyempre mahirap po kasing mag-expect eh. So if something is meant to happen then let it be.” When you look at each other deeply in the eyes, what do you see that wasn’t there just a year ago? A: “I see a very beautiful partnership, that’s how I see her. I’ve been in show business six years na po and parang ’yung four years of my career were not bad. I feel na the network (GMA) has been giving me the best projects, the best concept of shows. Pero nu’ng dumating kasi si Maine, it took me to another level.” M: “Ang sa akin, comfort ’yung nakita ko. Kung ginawa namin ’to last year, feeling ko iba kasi siyempre hindi pa kami ganun ka-close, hindi pa ganito ka kumportable sa isa’t-isa.” A: “Kaya right time ito.” That’s a profound word there, ‘comfort.’ Comfort means home, comfort means safety… M: “Parang confidence ko na rin po siya. We tell each other everything.” A: “Yes po.” When was the last time you went out together outside work? A: “Abroad. Italy.” M: “24 years ago (laughs). ’Yung nag Germany po kami. December, no?” A: “November. Germany-London.” Do you ask yourself sometimes, Alden, ‘Is this love?’ A: “It’s destiny, Sir. And alongside destiny, ang daming naka-incorporate du’n. It’s really destiny that’s working its way into our lives.” If Alden were a song, what would that be? A: “Nakaka-mental block ’yung mga ganyang questions…” M: “Gangnam. Oppa ‘Gangnam Style.’ (laughs).” Unforgettable memory in taping the series. A: “Ang dami! Palampahan 2017.” M: “Lampa po kasi kami ni Alden. Pero mas lampa po siya sa akin! So parang everytime po na meron po kaming lampa moves or lampa action… nadadapa, nadudulas, natatalisod. So paramihan po kami. Parang nasa five ka na, two pa lang ako…” A: “Ang final tally po niyan is sa last taping day…” What can you promise fans? M: “Ibibigay namin ang lahat namin dito. Talagang naghanda po kami dito, na talagang magugustuhan niyo pong lahat. Dahil nag-prepare po kami ng sobra-sobra dito at pinapangako po namin na hindi po namin kayo tatantanan (laughs).” A: “A lot of people are asking ‘What’s new about this soap?, Anong diperensiya sa iba?’ The difference po is it’s the first time Maine and I will be paired together onscreen so parang for me, if I’m a fan of AlDub, parang that’s something to look forward too. And they can be rest assured we did not take this soap for granted. We’ve been working really hard for this soap. Maganda siya, it’s a beautiful soap.” When will you two make it real? M: “Kung anong plano ng Diyos –” A: “– du’n kami.” M: “Yes, du’n po kami.” A: “Don’t panic its organic.” Don’t panic, its organic? M: “Destiny nga, ’di ba? If your destiny is to be together, mangyayari ’yun.”
